EMA has long been in the business of energy savings and power quality, and we’re honored to report that we’re now a distributor for Schaffner Active and Passive Harmonic Filters.
Although most plant engineers and facility managers are aware of Harmonic issues, since it often takes specialized equipment to actually measure them, it’s been a bit like voo-doo science.
But no more; Schaffner is a world class company that has long specialized in EMC and other transient suppression technologies, including both active and passive harmonic filters. Passive filters are LC circuits that serve as passively tuned “traps” to eliminate specific harmonics. Active filters, actually monitor the power in real time, and generate corrective currents to eliminate harmonics. Active filters can also supply reactive current to correct power factor problems.
At our Norcross location, EMA, in cooperation with Schaffner, has a demonstration test stand in operation. Anyone interested in seeing first hand how harmonic filters improve power quality, reduce energy consumption, reduce transformer heating, and stop nuisance breaker tripping is welcome. Just call us and schedule an appointment.
Schaffner Harmonic Filters are easy to install, are compact, and are very simple to adjust. In fact, most of the time, they work right out of the box.
Line Harmonics can be especially disturbing in facilities that have other sensitive electronic equipment in use, such as hospitals. Whether to use a passive or active filter depends on the specific circumstances, and one of our engineers here would be happy to discuss it with you
