Jessie, our expertise is primarily in the electrical/electronic portion.. so I may not explain this well.. but the tunnel engineers are careful to analyze the types of earth they are tunneling through, and that determines how the materials created by the tunneling are removed.

When using pumps, they inject liquid into the cutting area, and the only "pulverizing" is done by the cutting head itself. The liquid and material is then pumped to the surface by large horsepower pumps, where it's separated, and the liquid is then pumped back into the tunnel to be used again.

Look at the Herrenknecht video link I put near the end of the article, it has a great animation that explains this.

Curious about liquifying and pumping out the earth that they tunnel through.. how are they doing that? Do they pulverize the rock into powder?

After being skeptical of how much energy a drive could save, we installed 2 on some large fans. The energy savings were amazing, and I was surprised at how much more gently the fans started as well on the drives. We recovered the entire cost of the installation in just over 12 months, and now enjoy the benefits at essentially no cost to us. It is wonderful technology.

My experience with the "B" cabinet is very good. I think that for us maintenance people, its an easier drive to work with than either the N or the L.
